Moving back in with your parents is often a last resort - clinical psychologist

A slowing economy, job loss, a bad break up, there are plenty of reasons why someone may choose to move back in with their parents.

Stephen Grootes spoke to clinical psychologist Khosi Jiyani about the dynamics of moving back home.

Jiyani says going back home is often a desperate measure and a last resort for many people.

We leave the nest and build our own home. It is only circumstances that force us to reconsider that, and for many people, it is the last resort because we would have tried other measures of downscaling from a previous lifestyle and when all that fails, home becomes our only refuge.

Khosi Jiyani, Clinical Psychologist

She says the move can be difficult.

You have moved from being an adult to a little person again. It is not an easy situation for both sides. The parents have now had to open their doors one more time to accommodate you when they themselves are going through their own stuff. The last thing they want is to have to parent in the same way that they had left behind.

Khosi Jiyani, Clinical Psychologist

It's about how do we manage this under a new set of circumstances.
