According to WC Regional Commissioner Correctional Services Delekile Klaas, the prisoners broke a bed that was welded to the floor and used it to break open one of the windows.
Five of the escapees have since be rearrested.
Klaas says they're doing what they can to improve security at the facility.
We managed to establish what the problem was and our team is currently fixing that problem, not only the broken window, but the rest of the facility to make sure that the same doesn't happen.— Delekile Klaas, WC Regional Commissioner Correctional Services
According to Klaas, two of those who managed to escape were serving time for serious crimes.
One, for rape, the other for attempted murder.
The remaining four were due to soon be released from prison, Klaas says he doesn't understand why would they jeopardize their immient freedom by escaping.
