Callers: Adam Habib's critique of the EFF is alarmist and fear-mongering

Callers say academic and Wits vice-chancellor Professor Adam Habib is being populist and trying to scare people with his opinion piece published in the Daily Maverick entitled: Is Ramaphosa's ANC managing the challenge from the EFF?

In an opinion piece published by the Daily Maverick, Habib wrote, "The EFF is similarly redefining its raison de tat. But addicted as it is to political spectacle, it has become even more prone to a political populism that incites racism, advocates extreme policies outside any evidential base, and creates a militaristic, violent, nihilistic macho-culture."

He added, "the EFF may be younger and perhaps even more politically adept, but its track record is as populist, corrupt and administratively incompetent as the Zuma camp ever was".

You have seen in recent days this desire to attract back Julius Malema to the ANC and I think this is effectively this attempt at appeasement.

Adam Habib, University of Witwatersrand Vice-Chancellor

I think this a very dangerous attempt because what it brings within the organisation is a particular type of politics. A politics that borders on racism, a politics that is particularity militant and violent. A politics that takes on rights but never takes on responsibility.

Adam Habib, University of Witwatersrand Vice-Chancellor

Habib said 'By appeasing EFF you legitimise the reemergence of fascism' and criticised the party for perpetuating hate rather than reconciliation with justice.

Eusebius McKaiser engaged callers to hear if they agreed with what Professor Habib wrote. The majority of the callers said Habib was being alarmist and that he should focus on calling those involved in corruption to order.

People like Adam Habib must realise that from 1994; black people's lives went from bad to worse and the ANC did nothing but patronise black people. I can tell you now that the ANC is the custodian of the hardship of the black people.

Thabiso

Habib is being alarmist and its so sad for someone in his position. I would like for him to write a piece calling out his neighbors at UJ on the corruption and theft by the three executives who were dismissed by the R25 million. The fact that the EFF is such a power broker is because of its legitimacy. Professor Habib must not scoff at our constitutional democracy and how it is structured.

Bongiwe from Hatfield

Habib is just being a good alarmist. I wouldn't take the EFF as a racial hateful party, I actually look at the EFF as closer to the Pan Africanists; the likes of Sobukwe and so on. They don't try and gloss over our history.

Koketso

Habib is just being a populist, he keeps going on and on unnecessarily. What did he do for the students when there was fees must fall? He went on all media platforms speaking and speaking but there was no action. What is reconciliation without justice? What Julius is saying; I speak the same language.

Palesa

There are no jobs, there is no education, there is no upliftment of the people and Malema comes in and he is charismatic and he has called them all to him. But; sometimes he's a watchdog in the government but what he is actually preaching is division, violence and that I cannot see that in this country we should give it a platform.
