2.8 million people counted nationally at voting stations over weekend - IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says 2.8 million voters visited voting stations across the country to register to vote.

22 000 voting stations were opened over the weekend for voter registration.

The electoral commission's Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Dr Nomsa Masuku, says a process will be undertaken to determine how many of the 2.8 million people were reached as 3.5 million addresses were classified as "incomplete" or "generic", and the addresses for 2.8 million voters were not registered.

Before the weekend we needed to reach 2.8 million people for whom we did not have addresses on our systems at all, and about 3.5 million of people that had what is registered on the system as an incomplete address.

Dr Nomsa Masuku, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer

We still have a fair number of people to catch, and we just don't know what the quantum of the challenge is at this point in time.

Dr Nomsa Masuku, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer

We have to demonstrate to the Constitutional Court that we have done everything that is humanly possible to reach those numbers.
