'We are not opposed to Makwakwa reports being made public'

South African Revenue Services (Sars) says it has never been opposed to releasing reports related to top tax official Jonas Makwakwa.

Commissioner Tom Moyane on Tuesday told Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance Makwakwa had given him permission for his personal tax details and the reports to be made available to Members of Parliament (MPs) and Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene.

Makwakwa was suspended on money laundering allegations and then controversially reinstated last year when he was cleared in a disciplinary hearing following an investigation by labour law firm Hogan Lovells.

SARS Group Executive for Employee Relations, Luther Lebelo spoke to Karima on The Karima Brown show.

We engaged parliament and asked parliament to form a committee of three to get a senior counsel on whether this thing can be released because we didn't want to breach the country's laws.

With our engagement with Mr Makwakwa, he then wrote us a letter on 11th giving us permission. It is a decision we took on the basis of him giving us permission, because in terms of those pieces of legislation, at least if he gives us permission we can release them.
