British scientist Stephen Hawking dies aged 76

Renowned British scientist Stephen Hawking has died aged 76.

His family have confirmed he died peacefully at home in Cambridgeshire, UK.

The physicist shot to international fame in the 1980s after the publication of his book “A Brief History of Time".

Professor Hawking was 22 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease.

At the time, doctors gave him only a few years to live.

The condition meant Hawking was confined to a wheelchair and relied on a voice synthesizer to communicate.

The scientist became known outside the academic world, appearing in several TV shows including The Simpsons, and The Big Bang Theory.

In 2014 he was portrayed in the movie The Theory of Everything, starring Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne.

In a statement his three children said: "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today.

"He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years."
