Ed Dept 'embarrassed and disappointed' at claims against high-ranking officer

A Saps forensic officer appointed to investigate the molestation of minors at AB Xuma school in Soweto by a scholar patrolman has allegedly sexually assaulted 7 and 8-year-old children he was meant to protect.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says the department's psycho-social service team is at the AB Xuma school giving support to the two affected children and parents.

Mabona says it's embarrassing and disappointing that the authorities called into to help with the investigation which was started last year may be involved in sexual abuse.

We are informed that an inquiry has been opened. Remember we accompanied the parents to the police station as the department. We will then rely on the police to do their inquiry and decide on what it is they have at their disposal to make a further decision on the case.

Learners were taken through medical examinations as well. We are waiting for the police to inform us of the way forward.

He is a trained police officer. Remember, all these police officers are from the family violence and child protection units. They are not from the police station; they work with these cases everyday. That's why we are disappointed and shocked that such allegations can come from such a high ranking official who has been working on so many cases when coming to sexual assault.
