Eskom Inquiry chair: We will subpoena Guptas, Zuma and Myeni

After key people in the Eskom Inquiry failed to appear before the Eskom Inquiry, Parliament will now issue subpoenas to ensure they come forward.

These include people such as Dudu Myeni, Duduzani Zuma and the Guptas.

Zukiswa Rantho, chair of the Eskom Inquiry, says at this point in time, Parliament has no choice but to issue subpoenas to key individuals.

We do not have any other alternatives now - only to subpoena these people. We have given them enough time. They knew what we were looking for them. I think they are just giving us a tough time as a committee.

When it comes to summoning the Guptas, Rantho says the committee believed they would comply because they had assured the committee they were prepared to appear. Therefore they decided to give the Guptas more time to come forward, but this has not transpired.

We thought ... let us give [the Guptas] a chance, but now they are dilly dallying with us.

In the case of Dudu Myeni, Rantho says the former SAA board member has come up with excuse after excuse with no proof as to why she can't appear.

Myeni first claimed she could not appear because her lawyer was out of town. She then claimed she was sick.

The first time when she said she was sick, she never gave us any sick note. She just said that the doctor said she can't fly or drive for a long distance.
