Ramaphosa: Land grabs are anarchy and won't be allowed

EWN reporter Gaye Davis summarises what President Cyril Ramaphosa had to say about the land issue during his maiden Q&A in Parliament on Wednesday.

She says in answer to DA leader Mmusi Maimane's concerns, Ramaphosa talked at length about why he feels the land debate should not be collapsed onto one solely about expropriation. In fact, he emphasised that this was only one tool available for government to use.

Davis says Ramaphosa was clearly trying to calm the debate on land and allow it to become more coherent, compassionate and substantive.

He insisted that land invasions would not be tolerated, saying this would be anarchy and would not be allowed.

[He also said] to the other extreme of this debate, the anxious white people - particularly white Afrikaans-speaking people, who are fearing that their land is going to be seized tomorrow - saying them to stop 'swart-gevaaring' the debate. Stop turning it into a black threat. And to understand the legacy of apartheid and what it's done, what the dispossession of people did and they need to come together and resolve this.

Gaye Davis, EWN parliamentary reporter

He also noted that the Constitution already allows for land expropriation without compensation without any amendments needed to it.
