Sars commissioner Moyane wastes no time replacing Makwakwa

Following the resignation on Wednesday of senior tax official Jonas Makwakwa, Sars commissioner Tom Moyane has announced that Mark Kingon will take on the role of Acting Chief Officer for Business and Individual Taxes with immediate effect.

Makwakwa claimed to be stepping down from his position for 'personal reasons', but has been embroiled in fraud and corruption allegations since 2016.

He is accused of improperly influencing the appointment of a debt collector.

A report by the Daily Maverick earlier this week revealed New Integrated Credit Solutions (NICS), had paid R600 000 into his Makwakwa's bank account.

Speaking to Kieno Kammies on Thursday morning, Mark Kingon explained what his new role entails.

This has to do with our branches and our contact centres. Basically the front serving area relating to all of Sars across the country.

Mark Kingon, Acting Chief Officer for Business and Individual Taxes.

Kingon has been at Sars for more than thirty years, holding positions in a number of different departments.

I started at a local office in Pretoria counting cash in 1984, so just gone 34 years in the organisation. I've been in various departments across the organisation.

Sars says it will launch an investigation into the allegations of wrongdoing against Makwakwa.

In 2016 he was suspended following allegations of fraud and corruption, but was cleared in an internal hearing last year.
