'Mood is uncertain among farmers on the land issue' - AgriSA

AgriSA executive director Omri Van Zyl says there is a general sense of uncertainty amongst South African farmers.

This is as a result of the land expropriation without compensation debate taking place in the country, he says.

Van Zyl says the issue around land expropriation is somewhat vague at the moment.

It is being very politicised to a large extent. But I mean, if you are a farmer and a businessman and you've invested millions of rands into your land, and you stand a chance of being expropriated without any compensation clearly that raises concerns for investors and farmers.

Omri Van Zyl, AgriSA executive director

Van Zyl says it's positive that President Ramaphosa has denounced land grabs as a lawless activity that cannot be allowed in South Africa.

I really think there needs to be a better understanding of what it takes to be a farmer; it's not an easy thing. I think there is a misconception among many people that farming is an easy and profitable thing. Its very risky business.

Omri Van Zyl, AgriSA executive director

In response to the offer from Australian Home Affairs minister Peter Dutton, Van Zyl says there is a variety of responses. He says South Africa cannot do without food producers.

We would become a food insecure country in five years; which will lead to hyperinflation of food, general lawlessness, uncertainty and clearly we need to kind of look after our farmers.
