Gogo Nokulinda Mkhize Sangoma and her husband Tim Horwood joined Azania in studio to chat about their upcoming talk.

Sangoma Nokulinda Mkhize has teamed up with her husband Tim Horwood to share practical guidance from isintu (culture) for nurturing healthy relationships and families.

The talk, Love & Legacy: Practical Guidance from Isintu for nurturing a thriving union, is scheduled for 24 March.

It will reflect on their experience in balancing culture, spirituality, romance and friendship.

The couple joined Azania Mosaka in studio to share their love story and more about their family life.

Because of colonialism and the way that capitalism has separated families, we start to think that disassociation between ourselves, our spirituality and practices is supposed to be there. Then people take umbrage when you try to show that you can live under these conditions but also take things from your culture that serve you.

Nokulinda Mkhize, sangoma

This is what the talk is about, lets look at our cultures, how we relate socially in our families, communities, how we relate with our ancestors and what lessons we can take from that to take us forward.

Nokulinda Mkhize, sangoma

Speaking of his Christian background and meeting both his and Mkhize's spiritual beliefs, Horwood says ubungoma (divination) and Christianity are both based on a similar principle.

I didn't see there being a massive gap. I guess the transition helped because uNokulinda is quite chilled with the way she deals with these things. She is a normal person, she just happens to have a calling. It wasn't shocking for me.

Tim Horwood, husband

Where it is appropriate and allowed I have been on many trips with Nokulinda, like ukuthwasa, I have documented a lot of that stuff. We do Imbeleko for our kids. We have had ceremonies happen at our house. I have been involved in a lot of slaughtering....

Tim Horwood, husband

Mkhize says her relationship with Horwood has helped her in her spiritual journey.

Getting into a relationship with Tim helped me to deepen my focus into Amadlozi because there is so much he takes off my shoulders, in term of support, presence, and kinship.

Nokulinda Mkhize, sangoma

Having a partner, as a spiritual practitioner, is so important because I cannot carry this weight alone.
