Sisulu: SA issues formal diplomatic protest to Australia

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Lindiwe Sisulu, has issued a formal diplomatic protest to the Australian High Commissioner to South Africa, Adam McCarthy.

The protest demands a retraction of the comments made by their home affairs minister Peter Dutton, over the country’s land redistribution processes.

Sisulu says that, prior to Dutton's comments, she issued at statement to the international community assuring them the issue of land is under control and being discussed in Parliament.

She called Dutton's comments insulting and irresponsible.

To get a response like this, from a minister of home affairs was very offensive.

Sisulu says that if Dutton was still unsure about land expropriation in the country, he could have used diplomatic means to find out more.

He did not do this according to Sisulu.

If he had any doubts, he has recourse to get more information from his own high commissioner in South Africa our our own high commissioner in Australia.

When we called in the high commissioner, it seemed to us that this was a man that was grappling with how to respond. Ultimately the statement was there in black and white.

So we are now demanding a retraction of the statement, because it was misleading. It is causing panic. It is harming our image abroad and we are offended by that.
