Abalone wars isn't a national challenge but a global one says Chief Dir. at DAFF

It’s a known fact that the abalone stocks in the Western Cape are under a lot of pressure due to the poaching dilemma that they are currently facing.

More than R10 million in illegal abalone was confiscated in four separate raids in the Cape this year alone but there’s still a lot to be done.

Chief Director at the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries Thembalethu Vico chats about the abalone poaching dilemma and highlights the various ways the Department is attempting to deal with the matter.

Vico says that abalone poaching is a global challenge and it undermines the protection of the ecosystem.

It is not a national challenge, it is a global challenge.

Vico adds that as a Department, this is a scourge that they cannot fight alone so one of the things they’re doing is mobilising global communities to combat the problem.

We are engaging the Interpol structures as well to assist in dealing with abalone poaching.
