'This must NEVER happen again' - Life Esidimeni family members

Members of the Life Esidimeni Family Committee say they're are pleased with the verdict of former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke.

On Monday, Justice Moseneke ruled that government should compensate each of the families affected in the amount of R1.2 million.

Life Esidimeni Family Committee member Christine Nxumalo says while they accept the compensation, it can never replace their loved ones.

As families we feel that this is just the beginning to the end for us. This was just to show to the world that this really happened and it was as gruesome as the families said it was. Now that we have cleared that out, we need to gather our strength and move on toward criminal charges.

Christine Nxumalo, Member of Life Esidimeni Family Committee

Nxumalo says the next step is ensuring those responsible are bought to justice.

If these individuals are not charged it simply means that justice in its entirety has not been done.

Nxumalo says the families are willing to put together a portion of the money to ensure incidents like this never happen again.

Moseneke also ordered the state to construct a monument which will serve as a reminder the vulnerability of mental healthcare users.

For us a monument would mean it must never happen again.

Christine Nxumalo, Member of Life Esidimeni Family Committee

We are willing to work to get mental health to a point where people could actually feel safe and dont feel concerned that because they are in a government institution they should expect the worst.
