Buying or selling online? You'll want to read this first

With more and more of us using online platforms to buy and sell goods, what are some of the dangers we need to avoid when considering entering the online marketplace?

Recently a man from Mitchell's Plain was robbed by men posing as buyers who had responded to his Gumtree ad offering a car for sale. The man was taken to an ATM and forced, at gun point, to withdraw R17 000 from his account.

CapeTalk's Pippa Hudson spoke to Head of Marketing at Gumtree SA, Claire Cobbledick about some of the things to consider when buying or selling online.

One of the key things is to go in it with your eyes wide open and staying in control... don't get rushed into making decisions.

Check with your bank to ensure that the money has been cleared. Take control and take charge of the situation, and if a person wants your item, rather tell them to wait until the money has been cleared.
