Pauw: Moyane was on the verge of destroying Sars, Ramaphosa had to act

Investigative journalist Jacques Pauw says President Cyril Ramaphosa had no choice but to take decisive action against Tom Moyane.

The President suspended Moyane as Sars commissioner with immediate effect on Monday.

Ramaphosa took action after Moyane reportedly refused his initial request to step down.

Pauw, author of acclaimed book The President's Keepers, outlined the damage done by Moyane during his tenure.

He says that Moyane faces possibility of having criminal charges against him.

He was on the verge of destroying Sars and President Ramaphosa had to act.

Tom Moyane was probably the worst of Zuma's atrocious appointments during his reign.

Moyane became the Sars commissioner in October 2014, appointed with absolutely no tax experience.

Immediately after Moyane's appointment, he stopped the tax investigation into Zuma, Zuma's family members and the Guptas.

He started purging Sars of very dedicated and skilled civil servants. He failed to collect taxes from organised criminals such as Mark Lifman and Adriano Mazzotti.

Mark Kingon has been appointed acting Sars commissioner and the Presidency has not said whether Moyane will face a disciplinary inquiry.

Ramaphosa wrote a damning letter to Moyane, detailing reasons why Moyane was asked to step down.
