Pauw: Moyane was on the verge of destroying Sars, Ramaphosa had to act

Investigative journalist Jacques Pauw says President Cyril Ramaphosa had no choice but to take decisive action against Tom Moyane.

The President suspended Moyane as Sars commissioner with immediate effect on Monday.

Ramaphosa took action after Moyane reportedly refused his initial request to step down.

Pauw, author of acclaimed book The President's Keepers, outlined the damage done by Moyane during his tenure.

He says that Moyane faces possibility of having criminal charges against him.

He was on the verge of destroying Sars and President Ramaphosa had to act.

Moyane became the Sars commissioner in October 2014, appointed with absolutely no tax experience.

Immediately after Moyane's appointment, he stopped the tax investigation into Zuma, Zuma's family members and the Guptas.

He started purging Sars of very dedicated and skilled civil servants. He failed to collect taxes from organised criminals such as Mark Lifman and Adriano Mazzotti.

Mark Kingon has been appointed acting Sars commissioner and the Presidency has not said whether Moyane will face a disciplinary inquiry.

Ramaphosa wrote a damning letter to Moyane, detailing reasons why Moyane was asked to step down.

Ramaphosa wrote that he had lost confidence in Moyane's ability to lead Sars, reports EWN's Barry Bateman.

He says Moyane has brought disrepute to revenue service and government.

Ramaphosa sets out the decline in revenue over the last couple of years, his handling of the Jonas Makwakwa and recent reports about the granting of a R70 million VAT refund to Gupta-linked companies.
