#SADGT: Access to education is a 'chance thing' - Seeds of Hope co-founder
In this segment of South Africans Doing Great Thing, we spoke to the co-founder of the Seeds of Hope Foundation Dr. Zukiswa Mthimunye about access to quality education in South Africa, and her personal journey within the educational system.
The Seeds of Hope Foundation was founded in 2011 and looks to assist under-resourced schools, particularly those in townships.
Dr. Mthimunye says that she initially started working in financial services and Human Resources for the better part of her corporate career until she decided to transition into education.
Dr. Mthimunye says that she grew up in a township and went to an under-resourced school in the 80s. She adds that her personal journey started in primary school after she had an encounter with an educator who assisted her in getting a scholarship.
She saw something in me and in spite of not having much in this school she managed to help me get a scholarship.Dr. Zukiswa Mthimunye, co-founder of the Seeds of Hope Foundation
Dr. Mthimunye says that she’s always been uncomfortable with how she landed at that school because it was by virtue of being lucky.
I’ve carried that irritation and anger about the fact that access to education in South Africa is a chance thing.Dr. Zukiswa Mthimunye, co-founder of the Seeds of Hope Foundation
