Volvo Ocean Race officials have confirmed that the missing sailor who fell overboard is now "presumed to have been lost at sea".
47-year-old John Fisher was living in Australia but sailing under British colours for the round-the-world race.
The British yachtsman went missing on Monday while on watch aboard their yacht in the Southern Ocean, 1 400 nautical miles west of Cape Horn.
Adventureman and sports correspondent Jeff Ayliffe says it's every sailors worst nightmare.
He says that declaring Fisher 'lost at sea' was a tough call for the race team.
Ayliffe explains that the search effort was complicated by worsening weather conditions and the difficulties changing course.
The wind speeds at the time of the incident were about 35 to 40 knots, six to seven metre swells. The team did spend as much time as they could [searching].— Jeff Ayliffe, Adventureman and sports correspondent
