Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela has condemned calls by the EFF for people to occupy vacant land.
Madikizela was responding to the EFF provincial leader's remarks that people in Hermanus are within their rights to occupy vacant land that belongs to white people.
You encourage people to occupy vacant land because you think it is owned by white people, this is madness.— Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC
Madikizela will be presenting his budget speech on Wednesday and says he will be addressing the issue of illegal land grabs as well.
His department is being accused of selling land to big developers when the poor aren't looked after.
The idea that you have to use every piece of land for housing is a mad idea. We, as government, have resources like land that we must use to supplement the shortfalls of our budget to meet the commitments that we have made.— Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC
Madikizela says the budget speech will focus mainly on land reform.
This budget vote today is mainly about land reform and wealth creation, particularly for the previously disadvantaged individuals.— Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC
If you want to speed up land reform, make sure you give people title deeds. Once you give people the title deed they become part of that wealthy property market.— Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC
In agricultural land, you need to make sure that those people working on the land become partners and own that land, but what you don't do is this mad idea that we must kick out white people.— Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC
