Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has denied claims by the ANC that he was instrumental in granting a donation of over R11-million to an NGO he has links with.
Mashaba worked closely with Field Band Foundation for 16 years, 8 of which he served as chair.
Mashaba says he mentioned the organisation during a budget lekgotla in 2016.
I ventured my experiences with this organisation. I said it's one of the best run organisations in terms of dealing with the problems the city is facing. And then I said, as part of looking at others, please engage this organisation and see if their programs will meet with the city's strategies.— Herman Mashaba, Johannesburg Mayor
I did not say they should get the funding, I recommended that they [the city] look at it in terms of the problems the city was facing.— Herman Mashaba, Johannesburg Mayor
Mashaba said he cut all ties with the organisation upon his appointment as Mayor and insists all due processes were followed in awarding them the money.
How would I benefit from helping young black children who are destitute?— Herman Mashaba, Johannesburg Mayor
