Where does the cross on hot cross buns come from?

A hot cross bun is basically a spice, butter, egg and sugar enriched yeast dough studded with dried fruit and a cross on the top.

The real question is where does the cross on the bun originate from?

Speaking to Phemelo Motene, on the Weekend Breakfast, Anna Trapido, Author said the point about the human brain is that they make these beautiful shapes.

So of cause it has to do with Christianity now. That cross symbol is very significant to a lot of people and is associated with Christianity in our day.

But both the symbol, the cross symbol and the bun predate Christianity and originally that cross meant something quote different.

She said you find them in Pre-Christian ancient Rome and the cross symbol originally meant the four quarters of the moon.
