[LISTEN] Western Cape heading for WASTE crisis?

Water's not the only problem facing the Western Cape.

It seems the province is also facing a number of challenges when it comes to waste management.

Government says it's been looking for land for waste disposal for years.

It is all about behavioral change and thinking differently about lifestyles. currently our biggest problem is landfill space.

Anton Bredell, MEC Local Government, Environmental Affairs And Development Planning

We also need to get out of this momentum of digging holes and burying waste. We need to create waste economy.

Anton Bredell, MEC Local Government, Environmental Affairs And Development Planning

Bredell says it's crucial to manage waste by recycling and waste separation.

He says they are currently doing research to see how the other countries are handling their waste management,

We are going to pull in universities and try to answer the question of how are we going to build resilient cities going forward.

Anton Bredell, MEC Local Government, Environmental Affairs And Development Planning

All our resources are under pressure, our planet is under pressure and we need to start doing things differently.

Meanwhile the South African Plastics Recycling Organisation says encouraging public participation and creating awareness is key.

General Manager Annabe Pretorius disagrees with Bredell's suggestion of introducing tax and fines for poor waste management.

We recycle 20% of the plastic we manufacture. We are amongst the world leaders and we are doing absolutely great.

Annabe Pretorius, General Manager at South African Plastics Recycling Organisation

I dont agree with Bredell that we need to tax the people and fine them, because if I am fined for what I put in my bin I'm just going to throw it over the fence.

Annabe Pretorius, General Manager at South African Plastics Recycling Organisation

We need to make it easy and make our citizens see the value of it, what can be done with that end material.
