Old-age home at centre of fraud and abuse allegations under investigation

Gauteng Social Develoment MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza has confirmed that investigations are underway at the Lodewyk Spies Home in Eersterust.

The old age facility is accused of ill-treating residents and misusing funds it receives from the Department of Social Development.

In one alleged incident an elderly resident was forced to sleep on the floor.

Mayathula-Khoza says as soon as they received the complaints they launched an investigation.

The preliminary report I'm getting is that there is a suspect in the center itself , this suspect is a nurse that probably she could have done this herself for whatever reasons and its not allowed.

The investigation now is such that we are speaking to network providers to find out who actually took the picture of the old person and made him sleep on the floor.

Mayathula-Khoza says the investigation is also looking into reports that the home manger takes 90% of the resident's older person's grants, although a policy is apparently in place to support this.
