Doctor celebrates 65th birthday by partaking in 260km marathon across the desert

Take a moment and think about the best birthday gift you have ever given yourself?

Periodontist, Dr Hans Van Heerden is giving himself a special gift for his 65th birthday which involves taking part in a grueling 260km marathon across a section of the Sahara desert.

The run takes place over a week and Dr Van Heerden needs to venture across the desert in unbearable temperatures of nearly 50 degrees.

Dr Van Heerden says that he’s been running all his life and adds that he’s had a lifetime of adventure.

It just seemed like such a nice way to celebrate the 65 wonderful years that I’ve had says Dr Van Heerden. It sounds like an impossible thing but it'a a great challenge he adds.
