Whips & Chains: Meet local dominatrix Mistress Berlin

Mistress Berlin operates from her dungeon in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town.

When her erotic romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey hit bookstores in 2011 British author E. L. James, helped unleash BDSM from its taboo constraints and released it kicking and screaming into the mainstream.

Terms like 'dom', 'sub' and 'safe word' were no longer considered the lexicon of the deep, dark underground world of bondage, discipline, dominance and submission, sadomasochism.

But just how true to life is James’ portrayal of kink and what happens when the roles are reversed and it's a woman who's the dominant one in the dynamic?

CapeTalk's Sara-Jayne King spent the morning with Cape Town dominatrix, Mistress Berlin, to find out, and began by asking about the concept of a 'safe word'.

When you say the safe word, all action stops immediately. It doesn't necessarily mean the end of the session, it means we stop, regroup and maybe find a way to carry on.

She says clients come to her for a range of different experiences.

I'm a disciplinarian. I enjoy caning, whipping and flogging.

And like most of us, Mistress Berlin says their are pros and cons to her job.

One of the pros is that I don't have to work at the weekend!
