New bikers should be trained on safety tips, says motorcycle group

The Motorcycle Safety Institute is working to change the relationship between motorists and motorcyclists on South Africa's roads.

The institute says that improved road safety requires a shift in mindsets for both motorcyclists and car drivers.

The institute's Mark Cooper says crash statistics show that motorcyclists commonly collide with other vehicles.

According to Cooper, collisions with cars result in the highest number of fatalities for motorcyclists.

He says new motorcycle riders need to be trained on appropriate speeds and other matters affecting road use.

Cooper adds that motorists should be more vigilant and aware about motorcyclists sharing the road.

It's a team of dedicated non-professionals who've made it their mission to elevate the cause and get the message out there.

Motorcycles are on the road, they can be dangerous and fun, but they need everyone to take notice - both cars and motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists are not naturally visible because of the size of the bike, but car drivers often don't look for us, or will look but not see.
