'She was invincible. I associated her with continuity'

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu says struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela never tired in her role as a protector.

Sharing the sentiments of former first lady Graca Machel, Sisulu describes how Madikizela-Mandela nurtured her and her siblings as children.

One thing that I haven't heard coming across is how mama Winnie was able to get over natural borders we create for ourselves.

Lindiwe Sisulu, International Relations and Cooperation Minister

When Madiba divorced my aunt and married Winnie. Winnie responded to our family very much like she responded to Graca, it is a very unnatural feature. You know you would expect somebody like her would want to create her own space within the family, the way she related to Graca and embraced Graca, it's just such an unusual quality in her.

Lindiwe Sisulu, International Relations and Cooperation Minister

She took care of us while our parents were in jail and between her and my aunt, they had the responsibility of looking after all of us. She never tired of the role of being a protector, she was extremely protective.

Lindiwe Sisulu, International Relations and Cooperation Minister

She also had a hard and deliberate determination that you are not going to break her, not break the children.

Lindiwe Sisulu, International Relations and Cooperation Minister

Sisulu says she did not anticipate her death.

Mama Winnie's death was just so sudden. There is nothing in her that would for me, have made her susceptible to death. She was invincible. I associated her with continuity. I don't think anyone expected that she would die.
