SA Antarctic expedition: 'We'll be flying drones to find openings in the ice'

Dr Sarah Fawcett at the UCT Department of Oceanography is a member of the team of South Africans heading to the Weddell Sea region of Antarctica in January and February 2019.

The expedition of 30 people plans to study the ice shelf and marine life of the Larsen C Ice Shelf and search for early explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s team's ship the Endurance which sank there in 1915.

University of Cape Town‚ Nelson Mandela University and the South African Environmental Observation Network researchers will be setting out on this voyage. Fawcett chats to CapeTalk's John Maytham about the exciting expedition planned.

We will be flying drones above the ice so we can see openings in the ice...because one of the problems Shackleton had was having no way of knowing where the open water was. And we will be able to overcome that problem with technology.

This expedition is taking place on our very own research vessel, the S.A. Agulhas II and she is a new, very modern technologically advanced ice-breaking ship. And that's part of the reason why this is even possible.
