Vavi: 'This is the strongest attack on the right of workers to strike'

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) says a proposed law which will see strikes and pickets needing to go through a commissioner who would determine picketing rules, is an attack on the rights of workers.

The federation and the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) took to the streets of Cape Town on Thursday to demonstrate against this and other grievances.

Aubrey Masango spoke to Saftu Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi to find out more.

We are strongly objecting to what we perceive as the strongest attack on the right of workers to strike. The Nedlac parties have signed an agreement behind the backs of the workers to put all manner of stumbling blocks which will include forcing workers to embark on a secret ballot before they are allowed to go on a strike. And if they don't, they will then open the strike to interdicts from employers.
