Commonwealth Games: 13 missing African athletes could be avoiding returning home

At least thirteen African athletes have been reported missing at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Eight of them are said to be from Cameroon.

There are speculations that some of the athletes could be deliberately 'missing' to avoid the problems back home. More than 100 athletes reportedly overstayed their visas at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and some later asked for asylum.

Africa Correspondence Jean-Jacques Cornish gives more insight to the story.

We know there are problems in Cameroon... more interesting, the Rwandan coach went to the loo and never came back... there's also two squash players from Sierra Leone who didn't pitch up for their match and others from Uganda.

Jean-Jacques Cornish, EWN Africa correspondent

It is not unusual for athletes to go missing in this way at the Commonwealth Games, and currently, they still have visas so they are not sought by the law. Gold Coast residents have been asked to be on the lookout for them...

Cornish says there are reports that there are a number of these athletes in Melbourne who have already asked for asylum.

Its a bit of an embarrassment for the countries to send out athletes and for them to go missing like this.
