Strike: Wage row to shut down bus services on Wednesday

A national bus strike is set to take place on Wednesday following a deadlock in wage negotiations.

Mayco member for Transport in the City of Cape Town Brett Herron says all bus commuters, short and long-distance journeys, will be affected by the walk out.

In Cape Town alone, 72 000 MyCiTi commuters and 200 000 Golden Arrows commuters will be without their usual transport.

Usually we will ask Metrorail to assist by increasing their capacity but they are currently operating on less than 30% of their capacity they require for their own demand.

Brett Herron, MAYCO for Transport

We are asking employers to be flexible and where possible we are asking people to share cars. We anticipate that the taxi industry will be very busy.

It is currently not clear whether this will be a one day strike or if it will continue until the matter is resolved.
