[LISTEN] Study shows risk of HIV and Hepatitis B by sharing hair clippers

Men, the next time you visit the barbershop you may want to just take a second to ask about at hygiene procedures.

A study by researchers at the University of Cape Town shows significant contamination of hair clippers with blood, which could theoretically increase the risk of blood-borne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis B.

It found at least 42% of clippers collected from 50 barbers in Cape Town tested positive for blood.

You've seen guys who've got bumps at the back of the head, we call that Pseudofolliculitis. 10.5% of men over the age of 18 , African men over the age of 18 have got that condition.

Those people who have a 'Chiskop' - or clean shaven haircut - are particularly at risk of contamination.

There is a high risk of injury if you have a clean shave haircut. People must understand that Chiskop haircuts have a high risk of bleeding.

Head of the Hair and Skin Research Laboratory at UCT Professor Nonhlanhla Khumalo says even menthylated spirits are enough to reduce the risk of contamination.

You should not share your clippers unless we get to a point where all barbers have got an anti-viral spray and UV light chambers for cleaning their clippers.
