The Democratic Alliance says it will be challenging a decision by the presidency to transfer now former director-general of the State Security Agency Fraser to the Correctional Services Department.
Government announced on Tuesday that it has appointed Fraser as the new commissioner for correctional services.
The DA's Chief Whip John Steenhuisen says the party has written to the presidency in order to have the decision reviewed.
It is our view that this case mirrors the Simelane matter completely. Mr Fraser is under a massive cloud, he is not clear of the allegations against him. I think he has behaved in a completely unconstitutional and irrational manner in his pursuit of Dintwe in trying to prevent an investigation into himself and this makes him wholly unsuitable to fill a position as senior....— John Steenhuisen, Chief Whip of the DA
We have written now to the president, asked him to set out the reasons why he has chosen to move Mr Fraser here. That then opens the process up for a review on this, on the basis of rationality and reasonableness.— John Steenhuisen, Chief Whip of the DA
Steenhuisen says Fraser should have been placed on suspension.
I think the reasonable step for Mr Ramaphosa to have taken would have been to place Mr Fraser on suspension pending the outcome of the inspector - general of intelligence's investigation which is at an advanced stage.— John Steenhuisen, Chief Whip of the DA
