North West ANCYL pushing for Mahumapelo to step down

Residents of Mafikeng have staged protests against ANC provincial chairperson Supra Mahumapelo, demanding he resigns. This, over the alleged reports of corruption and failure to deliver public services in the area since he came to power.

There were reports of looting, torching of vehicles and barricading of several roads by protesters.

North West Police Spokesperson lieutenant Adele Myburgh says the unrest has escalated and has moved to other parts of Mafikeng.

Currently we are having this hide and seek situation which makes it difficult for the police to contain the situation.

This morning we have brought in more members to help contain the situation.

Myburgh has urged members of the community to help the police to calm the situation and refrain from involvement in any criminal activities.

ANC Youth League provincial spokesperson Tshiamo Tsotetsi says the protests are a result of various grievances the community has been raising, proven by the Standing Community on Public Accounts (Scopa).

We also understand that there has been an impact that our people have felt in the public health sector and the fact that government is not responding pro-actively to that.

These are issues that our people are raising that we cannot have an individual that is colonising the budget of the national government.

The call of the people has been very clear that Supra Mahumapelo is a larger portion of the problems in the province.

Tsotetsi says they are engaging with the top structures of the ANC telling them that the province thinks by removing Mahumapelo, things will be better in the province.

He says ANCYL is hoping that the party will be able to make a reasonable decision and that Mahumapelo finally hears the call of the people and steps down.
