Home Affairs confirms Atul and Rajesh Gupta have valid SA passports

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has provided clarity over multiple passports provided to controversial Indian businessmen, brother Atul and Rajesh Gupta.

Gigaba has confirmed the brothers each have two valid and active South African passports in their possession.

The details have emerged in a written reply to an EFF Parliamentary question.

The minister also explained how it is possible to have more than one active passport.

Eyewitness News reporter Lindsay Dentlinger has more on the story.

Atul Gupta has had at least 5 passports dating back to 2002 and his brother Rajesh eight passports dating back to 2006.

What we now know is that at least two of the brothers have two active passports in their possession and Ajay Gupta, whom Malusi Gigaba has said does not have South African citizenship and does not have a passport, his wife also has two active South African passports in her possession as we speak.

Lindsay Dentlinger, EWN reporter

Dentlinger says there is no indication whether the passports have been issued irregularly.
