[WATCH] AfriForum: 'We have not yet initiated private prosecution for Malema'
Lobby group AfriForum says it has written to the National Prosecution Authorities (NPA) about its intention to privately prosecute EFF leader Julius Malema.
Speaking to Eusebius McKaiser, CEO Kallie Kriel clarified that the announcement on Thursday related to the group starting the process for a private prosecution.
It has been already 2 years and 8 months that have gone by without the NPA reinstating the case, that's why we decided to intervene.Kallie Kriel, AfriForum CEO
You don't just directly ask for the nolle prosequi ['will no longer prosecute'] you ask for the NPA to do their job first.Kallie Kriel, AfriForum CEO
McKaiser asked if AfriForum had 'jumped the gun' with their announcement on Thursday.
Kriel says the press briefing yesterday was simply to indicate that they are putting pressure on the NPA.
Unfortunately we have seen the NPA not acting according to the law. We have seen that with the prosecution of former President Zuma, we have seen that with the prosecution of the Zuma's. According to the law they should have been prosecuted some time ago already.Kallie Kriel, AfriForum CEO
When we started the private prosecutions unit, we stated clearly that we want to go after cases where there is a strong case against somebody and the NPA decides for political reasons or political contacts of people not to prosecute.Kallie Kriel, AfriForum CEO
