Nikki Bush Creative Parenting Expert

In the parenting feature, creative parenting expert Nikki Bush chats about the value of pets in family life and child development.

Creative parenting expert Nikki Bush chats about the impact of pets on a child’s development, and how they can strengthen family ties.

Busy says that she was recently reminded about the importance and value of pets since the loss of her husband.

Therapists would say to my children, if you have dogs sit with them on your lap for at least 45 minutes a day while you’re going through this grieving process.

There’s a lot of learning and connection that can come with pets.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

Bush says that there’s an emotional feedback from engaging with pets because it gives children a sense of stability and security.

There was an orphanage in Rwanda where the children were looked after, but they weren’t being touched, cuddled or played with says Bush. She adds that a scan showed that their brains were 20% - 30% smaller than mine or yours.

You can see how important sensory stimulation is because there is that interaction and interplay - there’s the opportunity for children to care for something else, somebody else.
