Prasa and City officials urged to intervene after fatal Buttskop crash

A community leader in Blackheath has pleaded with the City of Cape Town and rail agency Prasa to implement an alternative solution for the Buttskop level crossing.

On Friday morning, seven people died after the bakkie they were travelling in collided with a train.

Frederico Hendricks says the level crossing has been the site of numerous, unreported accidents.

In 2010, 10 school children died in a train collision at the same level crossing.

This time, Metrorail says that a Toyota bakkie making its way from Eerste River was driving through the Buttskop level crossing when it collided with the train.

Seven men were inside the vehicle and died instantly.

Hendricks suggest that there be traffic control and access control at the level crossing as an interim measure, until a bridge is erected.

We are sad and speechless about this situation.

The community is bleeding and we are crying out to Prasa and the City of Cape Town to do something about this.

We must we have traffic control and access control on that same spot as a short-term solution.

A long-term solution should be a bridge or a subway underneath the railway line.
