[LISTEN] Love is the hallmark of spirituality & real religion says Dr. Sooliman

In the profile interview, founder, director and Chairman of Gift of the Givers, Dr. Imitiaz Sooliman chats about the misconceptions around the Islamic faith, and shares his story of how Gift of the Givers came into existence.

As a young boy, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman grew up in his family’s shop where his father helped customers in need with loans and preferential pricing. This was the first time Dr Sooliman was exposed to compassion, which became the back bone of his future success.

After qualifying in medicine, his work as a humanitarian began while he was standing on a parched Mozambican river bank watching children dig desperately for water without success, and eating the mud out of desperation.

In 1992, while visiting Istanbul in Turkey, Dr Sooliman was introduced to a Sufi Sheikh who told him to serve humanity unconditionally for the rest of his life, irrespective of race, creed or colour.

My spiritual teacher told me that I am instructing you to form an organisation called Gift of the Givers that will serve all people says Dr Sooliman.

Although the Sheikh could not speak English, and Dr Sooliman could not speak Turkish, they both understood each other perfectly which led to the birth of The Gift of The Givers.

Dr Sooliman says that as difficult and challenging as life is, there’s always a solution. He adds that the only way to resolve your problems is to sort out your own challenges as opposed to finding a way out.

People look at things from their own perspective and I take myself as an example says Dr Sooliman.

He adds that people within the media tend to focus on terror groups and say that’s Islam. There’s a failure from the Muslim countries, Muslim leaders and the Muslim people in promoting what Islam is really about says Dr Sooliman.

Worldwide leaders need to set an example; they need to have more interface dialogue with different countries and different religions to work together.

What people saw was the sincerity, the dedication and genuineness of how we worked.
