In this segment of South Africans Doing Great Things, Gushwell Brooks chats to actor and fashion designer Jodi Deerling about his collaboration with the travelling educator Chris Megaffin.
Founder of the bow tie challenge Chris Megaffin says that the initiative is centered around the educational inequalities in South Africa.
Megaffin has pledged to wear a different bow tie every single day for a year to show the plight of educational challenges for children in underprivileged communities.
Megaffin says that he launched the bow tie challenge in January this year and adds that the idea is to raise money for an organisation that supports employment for children.
I wear a different bow tie made by South African designers every single day.
— Chris Megaffin, founder of the bow tie challenge
My passion for fashion and education lead me to start the initiative says Megaffin. He adds that some of his bow ties come from actor and fashion designer Jodi Deering.
Deering adds that the merging nature of entertainment and fashion unfolded organically.
I had to leave Port Elizabeth to follow the dream.
— Jodi Deerling, actor and fashion designer
On one of the shows I was in, I wore a bow tie every day says Deering. He adds that he has the platform as an entertainer.
I wanted to design pieces that were affordable, and also items that were different and unique for men.
