The Hawks established a task team to probe the rise in kidnappings of businessmen in the country.
At least 40 business people have been abducted by alleged syndicates who in turn demand ransoms of millions of rands.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says Asians are largely being targeted.
We are experiencing a new generation of kidnappings and most of it is directed at Asian descendants. We have formulated an integrated task team that is comprised of the Hawks, detectives, crime intelligence who are working to together to deal with this problem.— Hangwani Mulaudzi, Hawks spokesperson
The number may be even higher as many are not reported, he says.
It could be more than forty because there are those cases that did not see the light as they are not reported to us. Those are the statistics that we have for now and I think these are people that were brave enough to report it to us.— Hangwani Mulaudzi, Hawks spokesperson
