The 23-year-old suspect is said to have signed in to the residence under a false name before entering the victim's room.

A 23-year-old suspect has been arrested for allegedly murdering his ex-girlfriend at the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT).

The girlfriend, a MUT student, was shot dead front of her roommate on Tuesday night.

It's understood the victim had been trying to break up with her boyfriend, the alleged killer, for at least two weeks.

Eyewitness News (EWN) reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo says police confiscated an unlicensed firearm from the scene.

It's understood that her ex-boyfriend signed in under his friend's name to gain acces to this residence and we also understand that he is also a former student at the Mangosuthu University of Technology.

Student's are questioning how this 23-year-old suspect was able to gain access to a residence with a firearm and be able to do something like this in front of her roommate.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN reporter

Police are saying he is likely to appear in the Durban Magistrate's court either tomorrow or Friday. From what we understand he didn't resist the arrest and handed himself over.
