[LISTEN] Insights into the play Green Man Flashing

Director and cast of Green Man Flashing talk about the play and how they identified with their complex characters.

Green Man Flashing is a story of Gabby who returns to South Africa from exile with her black husband Aaron just before the 1999 elections.

Eusebius McKaiser spoke to Director Malcolm Purkey, actors Litha Bam and Michelle Douglas to find out more about the play.

Gabby is a particularly challenging character because in 1 and a half hours, even though its three years in her real life, she goes through all these traumas. And we have to access some kind of truth in each one to be able to play it convincingly.

Michelle Douglas, Lead actress

Going into this was quite daunting because the character is quite a bit older than me so I was a little worried about that. I wanted to make Aaron a guy you could empathise with because I feel he wasn't a conflict with what he was asking Gabby to do. He loved her at one point and he knew what he was asking of her.

Litha Bam, Lead actor

Green Man Flashing is so on the pulse of all the crisis we face. I have conversations with myself about domesticity, so that if we set it up in a domestic space with an expressionist element about it, that was my basic idea.

Malcolm Purkey, Director
