LISTEN: Why DA's Makashule Gana wants to be the next Gauteng premier

As South Africans are set to go to the polls in next year's national elections, Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Makashule Gana, talks about his aspirations to become Gauteng premier.

Speaking to Eusebius McKaiser, Gana said he joined the DA when at the University of Limpopo while studying a BSC in Mathematics.

READ: 'DA only diverse party in South Africa'

When I got to university I was a student activist for Sasco and the youth league but around 2001 and 2002 when one was observing what was happening in the country, that was around the time when the arms deal was making waves.

Makashule Gana, DA Gauteng MPL

I started questioning myself as to whether the ANC itself is still committed to transforming the lives of the people and I was not convinced as it looked like it is regressing, that people are more self centered and I started to look for a political home.

Makashule Gana, DA Gauteng MPL

He said the DA afforded him the challenge in 2002.

There is an opportunity to build the DA into a party that will then work to transform the lives of the South Africans, that's when I joined.

Callers also engaged Gana on different questions relating to him wanting to be Gauteng's premier.

Lerato asked him what his plans are to address Gauteng's crime rate, another caller, Phata, asked him why did he choose to run in Gauteng instead of a different province.

I'm a Gauteng resident, I moved to Gauteng 13 years ago and the issues of Gauteng affect me. The issues of crime, I know how it feels like when someone enters your house with a gun and you only have your wife and your little baby and all they want to do is to take everything.

Makashule Gana, DA Gauteng MPL

When one talks about crime, others may be theorising it, I have been there where the gun was pointed at me less than five meters away from my face. One of there things that I took on when I said I want to do this, was that we need to make our communities safer, our forefathers and our struggle heroes did not struggle so that people can then commodify a piece of mine.
