WATCH: How organised crime exploited the campaign to hollow out NPA, Hawks, Sars

Author Mandy Wiener's gripping new book delves into the underworld of society and the rot within the South African justice system.

Her book, titled Ministry of Crime: An Underworld Explored, is a follow up to the bestselling Killing Kebble: An Underworld Exposed written in 2010.

Wiener examines how organised crime, gangsters and powerful political figures have been able to capture SA's law enforcement authorities and agencies.

She says it will take a long time to restore crime-fighting organisations ans state institutions such the Hawks, NPA, Ipid and Sars.

Wiener says the book follows the demise of Czech criminal and underworld kingpin Radovan Krejcir in Johannesburg, before zooming in on the crime rings in Cape Town.

She explains that the aim of her book is not to depress the reader. Instead, she hopes the reader feels empowered with information and inspired to become a more active citizen.

The investigative journalist joined Cape Talk host Pippa Hudson and a live studio audience to delve deeper into her book and research process.

I want people to read the book and have a better understanding and awareness at the end of it.

Hopefully people will read it and want to be more active citizens and ensure that there is better oversight of who watches the watchmen.
