[LISTEN] Was the Verulam attack a terror attack?

There is a lot of speculation surrounding Imam Husain Mosque attack in Verulam that left one dead and two others injured on Thursday.

34-year-old Abbas Essop was killed by his attackers while trying to help Muhammad Ali who had been stabbed in the stomach.

Imam Ali Nchinyane, who had heard noises from inside the mosque, sustained stab wounds but has now been discharged from hospital.

The Hawks say there are elements of "extremism" related to the attack.

Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium (TRAC) Director Jasmine Opperman says one must be careful not to jump to conclusions.

I think we must make a clear distinction between an act of terror and terrorism. That this could be an act of terror meaning that it has been done with great brutality, true, but we cannot at this point in time categorically say it is terrorism for the mere fact that we do not know the perpetrators, the intent, we do not know if any of the extremist organisations has actually been involved in this attack.

Jasmine Opperman, Research and Analysis Consortium (TRAC) Director Jasmine

If indeed this was an inspired attack, one would have expected them to move into that mosque and kill as many people as possible.

Hawks Kwazulu-Natal spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo explains their understanding of what transpired on Thursday.

The elements of extremism, we articulated them on the basis that the incident took place at a religious place and there was extreme violence used on the victim is very similar.
