Neilson wants to appoint new CT mayco to cement his position, says Prof

Acting Cape Town Mayor, Ian Neilson, says he will appoint an interim mayoral committee (mayco) on Monday.

Neilson says he will wait til 3pm before making the appointment official out of respect to the court.

Public leadership expert Professor Erwin Schwella says this move is an effort by him and the DA to enforce his incumbency.

Last week, Patricia De Lille took the DA to court after the party rescinded her membership, forcing her to vacate office.

Neilson has taken over as acting mayor and says that he now holds all the authority by law.

He says that he has delayed appointing an interim mayoral committee in order to allow the judge to reveal the outcome of Friday's court proceedings.

The Western Cape High Court on Friday reserved judgment on De Lille's request that she continue being a DA member and Cape Town's mayor.

The court ordered that De Lille’s seat in council remain vacant while the matter is pending.

Prof Schwella says the acting mayor wants to cement his position by appointing his interim mayoral committee.

He adds that the spat between the DA and De Lille is likely to drag on for months to come.
