The popular instant messaging app has rolled out new features for WhatsApp groups.

WhatsApp lists the following updates on its blog:

  • You can now add a group description: There's now room for a short blurb at the top of the chat, explaining the purpose, guidelines, or topics for the group.
  • There's more power for group admins: The group's administrators can now control and restrict who can change the group's subject, icon, and description.
  • Get yourself up to speed when you've missed out: You can quickly catch up on messages that mention or reply to you by tapping on a new @ button that appears at the bottom right corner of the chat, if you've been away.
  • Filter to find a specific person: The new participant search option allows users find anyone in a group by searching for participants on the group info page.

WhatsApp has also introduced protection so users can't be repeatedly added to groups they've left.

In addition, group creators can no longer be removed from the group they started.

The new features will be available on Android and iOS smartphones.
