Why we cannot afford to let SAA die (despite what Bruce Whitfield says)

Bruce Whitfield says SAA must be allowed to die. SA Flyer Magazine’s Guy Leitch disagrees. Whitfield got him on air to explain.

South African Airways (SAA) must be allowed to die, argued The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield in a recently trending article on Business Insider.

Whitfield argued that…

  • SAA keeps looking for handouts.

  • The new executive team is about the 10th in as many years.

  • Global rivals are supplying a better, more cost effective service anyway

However, Guy Leitch (Managing Editor at SA Flyer Magazine) argues we can’t afford to close down SAA.

Whitfield interviewed him to find out why.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for quotes from it).

The sad reality is it would cost far more… to shut it down… There are a lot of good reasons to keep the airline going…

Guy Leitch

It would be lovely if the airline could be closed down… but the reality is I think they just got to… keep on with it.

Guy Leitch

The reality is you can’t even sell off a small shareholding… the law… prevents foreign ownership of more than 25%...

Guy Leitch
